Size, shape & fitting guide

Lampshade sizes are measured on the base diameter, therefore if you see a 35cm/14in lampshade it means the width straight across the bottom.

The Shapes

Our lampshades come in two shapes, Coolie and Empire. Coolie has a classic more angled silhouette, Empire has a more modern, squarer outline.

Fittings

Shades up to 14in/35cm come with a fixed gimble ring which attaches directly to the bulb holder on the base. On request we can make you a shade with a top ring suitable for ceiling pendants.

All fixed gimble shades come with a plastic reducer ring which clips into the lampshade frame making it compatible with UK and European bulb holders. (The reducer rings can easily be removed by pushing together and down.)

Larger shades (14in/35cm – 20in/50cm) come with a duplex ring, where the shade rests on top of a carrier. Ideal for statement lamps as carriers come in all sizes giving you the option of adjusting the height of the shade on its base. We will supply your shade with an average size carrier.

If you are a US customer we can make your lampshade to fit a harp and finial carrier.

Which Size?

Lampshades are measured across the base to give the size. Click on a shade and you will see the base / top / slope measurement in inches and cm.

There’s no right or wrong when it comes to choosing a shade, all that matters is you love it! The Bloomsbury set adored colour and weren’t concerned with coordinating colour schemes but you might prefer to match your shade with the décor of a room or a particular base.

In terms of proportions here are a few general rules which might help.
